John enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1966 and became a Green Beret in 1967. He specialized in covert reconnaissance and served two tours of duty with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam-Studies and Observation Group (MACV-SOG).

He received several awards and decorations for his service, including a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars with “V” devices for valor.

Today, the former Green Beret is known for his books about his experiences in the Vietnam War, including Across the Fence: The Secret War in Vietnam, On the Ground, and SOG Chronicles. He is also a speaker, consultant, and host of the SOGCast: Untold Stories of MAC V SOG podcast. This podcast focuses on the history of SOG, featuring both John and his guest, a veteran of the secret wars, discussing their experiences and sharing unbelievable stories of heroism that may never be shared again. For students of history, it is worth every moment of listening. His books do much the same, highlighting both his experiences and those from interviews with other veterans of SOG.

“John Meyer’s story about Operation Tailwind does justice to the valor and heroism of the men involved in the four-day battle. Meyer writes about this historic SOG mission with clarity and attention to detail that is long overdue in regards to this top secret mission. SOG Chronicles Volume One is mandatory reading for anyone remotely interested in SOG history or simply in how the Green Berets operate deep behind enemy lines.”

– Billy Waugh, MACV-SOG and CIA legend.

“As the commander of SOG, I can say that ACROSS THE FENCE accurately reflects why the secret war was hazardous for our troops and so deadly for the enemy.”
